Comedienne Mindy Kaling on Dressing for Yourself

From the brilliant mind behind The Mindy Project, comedienne Mindy Kaling had an interview with Vogue about dressing for confidence and yourself.

The article, which you can see here, follows Kaling while she shops with an interviewer from Vogue and describes her thought process when shopping and how she decides what works for her. The thing is, she doesn't go by the "rules" of fashion, whats trending, or what she should wear for her body type. Kaling is a fearless shopping wonder, pulling things that she wants to wear, no matter how people might look at her or think.

In a video for the magazine, show at the end of the article but which you can also see here, you have to admire her unwavering desire to wear what she wants, no matter how funky:

At the risk of sounding like every other twenty-something with a dependable cable signal or access to Hulu.com, Kaling is my spirit animal. Though she is being told that what she has on is a great look, she can't help but suggest her demure outfit needs a little more, maybe even a fur bike helmet, or a dress made of chains.

Kaling employes the idea that has taken me years to realize. Dress for yourself, instead of others. Buy what you feel good in, and you wont care about what people think about you or what you're wearing. Then once you master that, you'll always be fly.

Style Spotlight: Humphrey Bogart, Founder of the Rat Pack, Inventor of Fly

While we're on the subject of Old Hollywood, I decided to do the next Style Spotlight on the original inventor of being being fly, and an original member of the Rat Pack, Humphrey Bogart.

Bogart is credited with being an American cultural icon, considering the amount of movies he was in, their popularity, and what I believe was his style. A leading man with a serious voice and knack for getting himself into bind, Bogart's Characters and he himself always looked put together while looking absolutely effortlessly cool.

In most movies he played in, Bogart was fearless and strong. Whether he was solving mysteries or trying to get the chauffeur's daughter on a boat to Paris, Bogart had a commanding presence. He could usually be seen leaning up again something, like a bar or a wall, in his three piece suit and hat, holding a drink or a cigarette and boy did he make it look cool.

Though he died at the age of 57, from throat cancer, Bogart is one of the most celebrated actors in the business, even to this day. Its very rare to see photos of him looking shabby or not put together, he always looked like a man who had some place nice to be with people he needed to see. His appearance commanded your attention and the way he spoke made it worth while. Thats why Bogart is the King.

It might just be and my ridiculous obsession with old hollywood movies and the people that appear in them, but something about the grainy pictures and their transatlantic accents always leave me feeling empowered.

Apart from being beautiful and admired in everything they did. They emanated a cool confidence. It radiated from them, probably due to the amount of lights shining on them at any given moment, but it seemed to shine straight through the screen.

I've always felt that light on my face, and found it intensely alluring. Yes they were acting, and yes they were paid to make people feel something, But not every person you see on the screen can make feel something.

These days, some girls want to be "Bad Bitches", women who have their lives together, are gorgeous and don't need a man for anything. Girls want to be Beyoncés, and Nicki Minajs, But the ladies of the old silver screen, they were the true Bad Bitches, they stood up for themselves, they were gorgeous, they walked into a room and commended attention. And all while hypnotizing their audience. Empowering and motivating everyone around them all at the same time.

So give one of those old movies a shot, maybe watch Liz Taylor in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", Rita Hayworth in "Gilda", or watch "How To Marry A Millionaire" with Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe.

Feel the glow and absorb it, then use it everyday.

They Say Pretty Fades, but Fly is Forever

I thought it was about time that I explain the title of my humble blog and why I decided to model my blog after its meaning.

Though I probably shouldn't say this out loud, but the line comes from a commercial. And a cell phone service provider commercial at that!

A couple years back, AT&T had a range of commercials showcasing how cool it was to have the best cell phone service and how there may be many trends, the best things are always in style.

Something about the last line really caught my attention and got me thinking. "You know what they say, pretty fades, but fly is forever."

And you know what? Its right!

It relates to being the best kind of person, instead of trying to be the best looking or most the fashionable.

Being fly is something you have to work on from the inside. It's about being confident in your own skin and emitting that to those around you. When you're fly, you don't have to convince others of your worth because it's undeniable and people can't help but see it.

That's what I wanted to teach myself and then teach everyone else. When you're fly , you feel great in your own skin and show the world you confidence.

So next time you're feeling down about yourself, remember. Though you may not be the best, you are fly. And Fly is Forever.

5 Ways to Instantly Lift Your Spirit: Pick Yourself Up and Dust Yourself Off

We all go through those days when the world seems bent on bringing us down.

You can have 1000 and one things to do but everything gets mixed up. Whether your boss is being super critical of you, or you woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning, nothing seems to be going right.

Those days are the ones where you need something to pick yourself back up, help dust off your shoulders and keep walking.

Heres my list of ways to beat those insecurities away or just shake off a killer case of the Mondays.

1. Get yourself a mantra.

-Find yourself a personal philosophy or a saying that will instantly lift you up. I'm partial to sayings that have to do with silencing your insecurities, since lack of confidence tends to stem from them. But anything you find that reminds you to keep your head up works. Make sure it's something simple that you can remember and say to yourself every time you start feeling worn out. Continually remind yourself that you are better than the circumstance that is wearing you down.

2. Find your theme song.

-This works best if you're one of those people how are always listening to music (guilty!) and just connect to music more than quotes. We all have those songs that we love and can listen to on repeat and indefinite amount of times, so pick one of those (or even a new song) that makes you sing out loud and not care who is watching. Then, every time you need to let things go, play your song and feel better.

3. Hit up the gym or just sweat it out.

-Ask any gym goer, or fitness fanatic and they will tell you how great they feel after a workout. The endorphin rush makes you feel energized and refreshed while also boosting your mood.

Whether you get a workout in at your local gym, take a quick jog, or have a quick dance party at your desk in the middle of the day, some physical activity will help get that brain energized. Not only will you be more alert, you will also have fresh eyes to look at your situation and approach it differently.

4. Take a moment for yourself.

- Get into yoga or just take a moment to meditate and you can gather your thoughts and see things clearer. Take a deep breath, and don't think of anything for a couple minutes. Recite your mantra and focus on your breathing and the world will be like new.

5. Relax

- Things happen and can overwhelm fast, but just remember that if you relax for just a few minutes either, with a dance party or some meditation you'll see that things aren't as bad as they seem. Deep Breaths are remember, you're doing something great with your time and by the end will be worth it.

Speaking of Beyoncé....

Its time for another style spotlight and who better to do it on than Queen Bey herself?

A long way away from her days of running around a beach in tattered clothing with her fellow Destiny's Child alum, Beyoncé broke out as a solo artist and music (and teenage girls and boys) will never be the same.

She's not only a world wide celebrity and sex symbol to many a young boy (or girl, really) she has become a symbol of empowerment for girls and women alike.

Calling herself the Queen, unapologetically and without flinching, she lets her followers know that its okay to think highly of yourself when you know you have so much to offer the word.

Though she is a household name, Beyonce manages to keep her private life out of the celebrity gossips magazines. She even had the power and the influence to keep an entire album complete with accompanying music videos, a complete surprise.

The queen definitely lives up to her nickname and continuously proves that she has no equivalent and that she rises above other celebrities who can't even seem to keep their unmentionables a secret.

Take heed followers, for this is the inspiration. Though we are not all Beyoncés, she is a great example of what working hard and believing in yourself and being the best version of yourself can lead to.

#BanBossy! The New Feminist Movement

The LeanIn Organization and Girl Scouts of America have joined together to ban the word "Bossy."

In a PSA for the campaign celebrities like Jennifer Garner and Jane Lynch team up to show how using the word bossy to describe girls is demeaning and stifles their confidence.

What do you think? Does calling someone bossy make them quiet down? Is this a new kind of Feminist Fight?

And as if you need more of a reason to be more like her, Queen Bey herself has joined up to the cause.

Dressing For Confidence, It's Science!

Its official! All of us with overstuffed closets and an excess of shoes finally have a reason to keep up our addicions!

Upon lurking the internet for a articles on confidence building and fashion, I can upon this article from the geniuses at Vogue. click on the link and take a read, but basically it shows how different women see certain pieces of their clothing make them feel strong.

Now, in essence that is not breaking news, people create connections to clothing all the time. Everyone has that sweatshirt that makes them feel better when their sick or those jeans that make you feel fearless, but this is what we should think about whenever we get dressed.

When your in a store fitting room trying to figure out if that trendy skirt or shirt is really worth its $30 price tag, remember the connections you can make to it. If it doesn't make you feel like you can walk straight up to that person at the bar, its not worth its price no matter how cheap it is. After all, once you find that piece that makes you feel like a movie star, you wont mind paying a little more than you should for it.

Style Spotlight: Lebron James

Whether you follow his career or just envy his basketball skills, you have to admit, the man has got style.

Trolling through his google images or his countless Instagram pictures, you'll see that Lebron not only has a passion for fashion, but a message to portray with it.

As a poor kid from Akron, he grew up living in other people's houses with very little things that he called his own. But now as a NBA star and worldwide celebrity, King James, as he so humbly calls himself, has a lot more to his name these days.

With all that NBS and endorsement money, Lebron has made himself into a fashion icon. Although he is not the first famous athlete to cross over to the fashion world, he is one that is trying to help his fans (and Instagram followers), see the importance of fashion and what it can do for you.

James often captions his photos with the hashtag Strive for Greatness when they deal with training and working on his basketball skills but also when he gets all dolled up and shows his fandom and #FashionIsConfidence.

Lets Hear It For The Menswear

There's just something about a well dressed man...
Whether he's in a suit, a sport coat or just in perfectly distressed denim and a sweater, you can tell when a guy put some thought into what he was going to wear that day.

My current fashion obsession, Menswear is everything. A section of the fashion industry that though was long ignored, over shadowed by huge women's fashion houses and social norms, men have come into the fashion light and many of them dress better than women.

It's completely unfair, though, that menswear is so simple (pants, shirts, shoes, done.) When the rest of the female population has so many options to choose from every morning.

Yes, the options in women's clothing makes it a lot fun to mix and match and express personalities, but there's something beautiful in simplicity to me. The simplicity of a well cut suit and tie. And no woman can resist a man in a well fitting tux.

Speaking of faking it 'til we make it....

Some people consider it cheating. Others consider it more of a boost. I say, whatever helps you feel good when you walk down the street in that new dress you bought and thought you'd never truly fit into, go for it.

Confidence Is Key

First thing's first. If you want to be the best version of yourself that you can be. You gotta feel like you can be that person, or maybe already are. Its not just enough to buy clothes that you think you look good in, you gotta show people your confident in yourself and what your wearing.

And I know everyone has insecurities and not everyone feels amazing about themselves 100% of the time. But I'll share with you what I learned when I was at the height of my insecurities...Even if you don't feel confident, Fake it 'til you make it.

Once you learn to do that, All your other insecurities and worries about your body, will go away. You may not have the typical bikini body, but you have a body and its the only one you'll get in this life, so treat it and yourself right.

Lets Make A Deal...

Next time you bring yourself to the fitting room of the next store you shouldn't be spending you money in, think about how that piece of clothing on the hanger is going to make you feel when you wear it.

Do you feel good? Strong? Dare I say, Fierce?

If not, put that piece down. Clothes should make you feel comfortable in your own skin and make you feel like yourself. Next time you buy something, make sure you either love it, or even think it possesses super powers that will make you invincible!
